The speaker of the Congress said that the Secret Service chief had failed

The House Homeland Security Investigation of the Butler Shooting: Findings from a Bipartisan Report on July 13th, 2018, Secretary of the Interior Department

The review is in addition to congressional probes also being led by the Democratic-led Homeland Security panel and their Republican-led counterpart in the House. Today, a bipartisan group of the House Homeland Security panel will visit the site of the shooting in person in Butler and discuss their findings so far after the tour.

Additional testimony from Cheatle, the FBI and Homeland Security officials have been called for by the chairman of the panel. However, Cheatle has yet to accept the invitation.

Cheatle should no longer hold her position because the American people are still searching for answers, according to Green. Since July 13th, the committee has worked in good faith to get answers.

“The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders. Cheatle said that they failed on July 13th. “As the Director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse.”

The panel includes Janet Napolitano, the Obama-era DHS secretary; Fran Townsend, the Homeland Security adviser to President George W. Bush; former federal Judge Mark Filip, who served as Bush’s deputy attorney general; and David Mitchell, the former superintendent of Maryland State Police and former Secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security for the State of Delaware. Other experts could be named to the panel soon.

Mayorkas said he was grateful to the distinguished members of the independent review who would bring decades of expertise in law enforcement and security operations to the investigation.

Cheatle denied claims that he had denied Trump team requests for additional security.

He said that over the past two years she had led the Secret Service with honor, integrity, and dedication. “She is deeply respected by the men and women of the agency and by her fellow leaders in the Department of Homeland Security. I am proud to have worked with Director Cheatle and we are all grateful for her service.”

Cheatle told lawmakers the agency is fully cooperating with the FBI’s investigation, congressional oversight and conducting its own internal review. She could not answer most of the questions about the findings due to the ongoing nature of their work.

The concerns are expected to be echoed repeatedly in what’s expected to be a hours-long hearing that could last much of the day. It follows a growing list of investigations into the shooting and the Secret Service.

Guglielmi told NPR that the agency made changes to ensure the security of the protectee when certain specialized units were not provided. “This may include utilizing state or local partners to provide specialized functions or otherwise identifying alternatives to reduce public exposure of a protectee.”

This included several denied requests for magnetometers at public events, including a 2023 event in Michigan and Bronx County, N.Y., and Wildwood, N.J., rallies in May. The South Carolina rally the Secret Service did not have counterniper teams available for was taken care of by local law enforcement.

Reply to the Subpoena Hearing: A Task Force to Investigate the “Death of a Black Hole” in the United States Secret Service

The letter read that you failed to give answers to questions about the Secret Service’s operational failures and how it has learned from them.

The American people have questions. They need answers. Congress deserves answers,” said House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky. “You were subpoenaed today to provide answers, and, ma’am, you did not do that.”

The hearing featured members on both sides of the aisle expressing frustration over Cheatles’ testimony, in which she didn’t give clear answers on how the shooter was able to get on to a nearby roof with a clear line of sight of the former president.

The House Oversight Committee reprimanded Cheatle on Tuesday for not fully answering questions about the assassination attempt, and her resignation came a day later.

Biden mentioned that the independent review commission was launched over the weekend to investigate an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

President Biden thanked Cheatle for her service, saying “she has selflessly dedicated and risked her life to protect our nation throughout her career in the United States Secret Service.”

“The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”

There will be a panel which makes recommendations for changes to governmental agencies. The House will vote on a resolution to establish the force this week.

There will be a bipartisan investigative task force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats.
