The U.S. men’s soccer team opens the Paris Olympics with a tough defeat against France in the second half of the final whistle
Lacazette continued his brilliant play in the 69th minute with an assist. He passed to Michael Olise who gave the French a 2-0 lead.
The U.S. missed a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard first. The right-footer smashed off the bar in the 59th minute by Djordje Mihailovic.
Both the U.S. and France started the second half much how they ended the first: trading spirited passes and attacking deep into their own halves of play. The overwhelmingly French crowd cheered and yelled to will on their squad that finished 13th at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The United States women’s soccer team after its exit from the Women’s World Cup: “Going out of there” before going to Africa
In Olympic men’s soccer, roster restrictions require nearly all players to be under 23 years old. The US squad is coached by a man who played for MLS or an academy club. Three players are over the age of 31, one of which isWalker Zimmerman. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he started three times and appeared in all four U.S. matches.
PARIS — The U.S. women’s soccer team heads into the Paris Olympics with a new coach and an opportunity to reset after dismal performances at recent major tournaments.
Speaking at a news conference in Marseille, France, head coach Emma Hayes insisted the team is looking forward, following its earliest ever exit at a Women’s World Cup last year.
“We’ve moved past that. I think this team is past that. Our motivation isn’t always about righting the wrongs. Far from it. She said that they were excited and prepared.
The U.S. women’s team has won four Olympic gold medals, but none since 2012. The team stumbled at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics (exiting without a medal after losing to Sweden) and winning only bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
In an interview with NPR before the team traveled to France, Hayes described the United States’ group-stage matches as “three very tough group games” with “three very different propositions.”
“We take one game at a time, and with Emma coming in, we’ve learned a lot, we’ve grown a lot and we’ve introduced a lot of new things that I think will help us have success in this tournament,” she said.
“I know what a threat she can be,” said defender Emily Fox, of Banda. “Their entire team is a threat, especially with their transition. But we’re ready for it. … We know Zambia is going to be a really tough opponent to play against, so focusing on them and going from there.”
The team plays Zambians in Nice on Thursday before playing Germany and Australia in the group stages.
The U.S. Women’s Soccer Program at the Olympics, a new coach and what she expects for the next generation of soccer
As a new coach, how much pressure is she under to do well at the Olympics, she replied that she pays little attention to external pressure and is grateful for the history of the program. She suggests that the quality of the women’s game internationally may be more important than the expectations of U.S. dominance.
The U.S. is ranked fifth in the world. That is the lowest spot ever since FIFA began ranking women’s teams more than two decades ago.
“This is the world’s game and it has got out of hand in some places”, said Hayes. “We have to focus on what we have to do to get to those levels again.” It isn’t ten years ago when there wasn’t a lot of parity in the game. There is no difference at this time.
She didn’t think anyone should expect one team to dominate the landscape of football in the way they did 10 years ago.
