Tim Walz Taps Minnesota Gov. Tim Walze as Her Running Mate: A Conversation with Lorentz, Schur, Harbison, and Randall
In his reelection victory, he promised to protect access to abortion services after the repeal of Wade. And by the narrowest of margins, voters handed Democrats control of the state legislature.
The first term of Walz was filled with a Republican-led government and a Democratic one. He collaborated with lawmakers to pass a budget that made it possible to boost spending for schools and cut taxes.
There were compromises that worked well for the state of Minnesota. I was pushing for tax cuts that he eventually agreed to, and I agreed to higher education funding levels than I had thought necessary.
Aiming to curb the spread of the virus, Walz ordered schools be emptied. Later, he ordered restaurants and houses of worship shut their doors and Minnesotans stay home and required that face masks be worn in public places.
The restrictions that were initially intended to be brief stretched on and some grew frustrated about the limitations on their lives and Walz’s authority.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Taps George Floyd During the 2020 Urban Rifle-Binny-Brinding Outburst
In May of 2020, Minnesota faced another moment of crisis. In an incident screened around the world, Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck as he asked for help. Floyd died and frustration created riots around the city.
Walz called in thousands of National Guard soldiers and state troopers to police the Twin Cities, but not quickly enough to prevent the burning of a police precinct and looting of several businesses.
“We cannot have the recklessness that went on, we can’t have it because we can’t function as a society and I refuse to have it take away the attention of the state that we need to be working on,” Walz said days into the riots
The mayor of Minneapolis and his opponent disagreed over who should take charge. The governor did not act quickly, according to the former Senate majority leader.
“I felt like he froze,” Gazelka said. The National Guard was delayed three days beyond the Mayor’s request. And that’s just unacceptable to not be able to handle the crisis in a way that I think it should have been handled.”
The timing of the call-up is related to the presidential race, with Trump taking credit for the soldiers being sent after his administration had conversations with the Walz administration.
Democrats checked off every item on their wish list, from free breakfast and lunch for students, legal protections for abortion and gender-affirming care, to restrictions on guns, legalized marijuana and restoration of voter rights.

Tim Walz: From a teacher’s union to the state of the union: What a monster he was in Minnesota during his time in office
The president of the state’s largest teachers’ union said that Walz has not forgotten his teaching roots while in office.
“He’s been a great governor to work with, you know, his record for investing in public education. He’s made it possible to improve working lives for families and protect collective bargaining. Specht said that. “He has a great track record that I think would resonate across this country.”
The governor was able to launch his national profile with his policy wins. He became chair of the Democratic Governors Association and co-chair of the Democratic National Convention’s Rules Committee.
“What a monster. Kids are eating, eating and having full bellies so they can go learn and women are making their own health care decisions,” Walz told CNN’s State of the Union in late July. If they want to call me that, I’m more than happy to be called that.
“This individual says, ‘You’re not going to be allowed to enter, you’ve been deemed a threat,’” Walz told Minnesota Public Radio years after the exchange with a security guard. It was a combination of being frustrated and realizing how important it was for people to be looked at.
As Walz was tiptoeing into politics, he took a group of students to a campaign rally for then-President George W. Bush. They were asked to leave because some of them wore stickers supporting John Kerry.
He received a social science degree from Chadron State College in Nebraska in 1989 and later spent a year teaching in China through a Harvard University exchange program before returning to teach in his home state. He met his wife, Gwen Whipple, while teaching. The pair moved to Minnesota in 1996 where they taught at a high school.
He enlisted in the Army National Guard at age 17 and was born and raised in Nebraska. He frequently points to his upbringing in a small community, noting that several of his cousins were classmates.

Biden ’05: A Keystone for a Democratic Party in the November 2016 Superkick Off West Side of the Mississippi Turnout Box
The swing state Democrats will likely need to win the election are at stake in the presidential race.
The announcement comes as Democrats have rallied around Harris following President Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign. With Harris as the party’s new leader, Democrats have seen renewed enthusiasm at rallies and with donors. The vice president and her running mate will begin their tour in Philadelphia today and will finish in Las Vegas on Saturday.
He talked about his work as a teacher and a football coach. One of his former football players was on CNN after the speech, talking about how Walz helped him and was a father figure, as he was raised by a single mom.
But the 60-year-old governor could also face questions about his response to riots in Minneapolis following the 2020 murder of George Floyd and widespread fraud during COVID-19 under a federal program intended to feed kids. Audits have suggested lapses in oversight by the state Department of Education.
The Elitist Problem of the Democratic Party: The Discourse between Dems and Blacks in the Era of the Midwestern Era
The Democratic Party has had an elitist problem. It started before Trump with Republicans calling them “Limousine Liberals” and “latte-drinking liberals.” It is more acute now in the age of Trump. Democrats haven’t been able to connect with the working-class white voters the way the party did decades ago. A plan of how to talk to them was created by Walz and he may have said the same words but in a different way.
The former high school geography teacher and National Guard veteran, who helped green light a slate of progressive policy priorities in Minnesota, could help win over voters in Midwestern swing states.
“Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires and then wrote a best seller trashing that community. Come on. That’s not what middle America is. I have to tell you that. I can’t wait to debate the guy. That is if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”
He talked about what it’s like to be a kid in a rural community, where neighbors treat each other the same and you don’t have to compromise your values.
Tim Walz: a good shot, but a white guy. Bringing reassurance to black guys in the running mates if you’re a black woman
Being a good shot was one of the things that Walz talked about when he was in Congress. He had a camouflage hat on in the video when he got the call to be her VP.
“Some of us are old enough to remember when it was Republicans who were talking about freedom. It turns out now what they meant was that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. We respect our neighbors in Minnesota and they make their own decisions. If we didn’t make the same choice, there’s a golden rule, “Mind your own damn business.” ”
I can see you there. He jokingly pointed to the others in the front rows before delivering a progressive message.
He’s a white guy. Harris is a Black woman, and part of his job — the job of all running mates — is to testify, to bring reassurance to groups that might be skeptical of the person at the top of the ticket. That might be ideological or — when there hasn’t been a woman as president, let alone a Black or South Asian woman in the office — it might be the white guy’s job to reassure other white guys.

Walz is not from San Francisco – he wasn’t born in Philadelphia, but he did tell Harris about the “E elephant in the room”
Walz ain’t from San Francisco. He made that clear Tuesday night. He hit on the ” elephant in the room” when he made an off-the-cuff comment.
Harris didn’t know the Minnesota governor or the former congressman before this process But his speech with Harris in Philadelphia Tuesday introducing the Harris-Walz ticket to the country made his appeal clear.
He’s the guy who coined “weird” as an attack line against former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, but he didn’t dwell on that in the speech.
