The Blue Wall Caucus: An Update on the Vance-Halbaxes-Harris Debate in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania
It will be the first time that the candidates will meet on stage together and present their policy positions to a larger American public, which may be less well known than their partners on the presidential ticket.
The two hold similar roles in their respective campaigns: to appeal to working-class voters in the “Blue Wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.
Margaret Brennan, chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS, will moderated the debate, which will be moderated by Norah O’Donnell.
On Tuesday, you can also follow NPR’s live blog for the latest updates, analysis, fact-checking and color. On public radio stations, you can listen to NPR’s special debate coverage.
Before becoming an Ohio senator, Vance built his profile as a Silicon Valley venture capitalist and author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” a memoir detailing his life as a young adult from Middletown, Ohio. In California, Vance was connected with tech investors who donated to his Senate campaign. Walz, a former congressperson and current governor of Minnesota, was not as high-profile of a pick as Vance, but the Kamala Harris campaign has leveraged his background as a former teacher, football coach, and veteran to appeal to rural America. Walz has inspired much of the Democrats’ election messaging, like calling the GOP “weird.”
He was a former football coach and teacher. Clean energy mandates, universal free school meals, family and medical leave benefits, and abortion protections were just some of the progressive wins Governor Walz secured as a governor.
What Has The Walz-Vance of Congress Done Recently Concerning the Children and Animals of the United States, and What Has It Learned About His Voting Career?
Since his nomination, he has had to address some controversies including making jokes about children and Democrats, and calling them “childless cat ladies.” The false claim that Haitian immigrants are eating their pets in Ohio has come under fire.
The death of George Floyd, the murder of other people and widespread fraud during the COVID-19 program all led to questions about Walz’s reaction as a two-term governor. Audits have suggested lapses in oversight by the state Department of Education.
Walz has been getting help for the debate from Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Transportation Secretary. Buttigieg helped Harris with her debate preparation. It wasn’t immediately clear who he was preparing with.
Walz, who served in the National Guard for 20 years and reenlisted after Sept. 11, only saw wartime deployment to Italy in 2003. Vance, who served in the Marines and did a six-month deployment to Iraq, also has not seen combat.
The Vance Voted Coin Toss Debate: A First Look at the Impact of a Trump-Harrisburg Administration on Tech
There will be no audience in attendance, and the candidates will each take a stand behind podiums. Candidates will have two minutes for closing statements. Vance won a virtual coin toss on Sept. 26 and elected to go second with his closing statement.
Unlike the last ABC debate between former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris, the microphones will remain on for the duration of the debate. The candidates will have 2 minutes to answer questions and 2 minutes to respond to their opponents.
Two minutes are given to each candidate to answer the questions, and two minutes for the other candidate to respond. Each candidate gets a minute for rebuttals. Candidates may receive an additional minute each to keep the discussion going.
The former school teacher and Hillbilly Elegy author both took stances on tech. He signed a different bill to raise driver pay, even though he wouldn’t have liked it, after vetoing a bill that would’ve increased minimum pay for drivers of ride hailing services.
Vance has ruffled feathers in his own party with his stance on tech competition regulation. The former venture capitalist and Peter Thiel protégé has praised Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan as “one of the few people in the Biden administration that I actually think is doing a pretty good job,” even though her progressive enforcement and rulemaking on tech is often the subject of critical Wall Street Journal op-eds and corporate pushback.
The economy and immigration policy are both important issues in this election, but we will be listening in to hear how a Trump or Harris administration might affect tech.
The CBS Reality Channel is Tuning Fact-Checking Rather Than Hoping for Real Time: The Cases of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump
Rather than have the moderators jump in to fact-check in real time, CBS plans to display a QR code on the screen for viewers watching its channel, directing them to a live fact-checking page.
Going into Tuesday’s debate, former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris are neck and neck in the polls. A recent New York Times average of national polls showed Harris up three points in national polls, but neither candidate boasts a meaningful lead in battleground states like Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
