Aerons from Ukraine in the First Day of a Russian Attack: The Damage to the Kyiv City Airfields and Reservoirs
One person was injured after the roof of a five-story residential building caught fire in Kyiv’s historic center, according to Popko, who heads the city’s military administration.
Polish and allied aircraft have been deployed in Polish airspace because of the massive Russian attack on nearby Ukraine, according to the operational command of Poland’s armed forces. The steps were taken to provide safety in Poland’s border areas.
Explosions were heard across Ukraine on Sunday, including in the capital, Kyiv, the key southern port of Odesa, as well as the country’s west and central regions, according to local reports.
Russian strikes have hammered Ukraine’s power infrastructure since Moscow’s all-out invasion of its neighbor in February 2022, prompting repeated emergency power shutdowns and nationwide rolling blackouts. Ukrainian officials have routinely urged Western allies to bolster the country’s air defenses to counter assaults and allow for repairs.
The combined drone and missile attack was the most powerful in three months, according to the head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration Serhii Popko.
Our energy infrastructure were the enemy’s target. There are damage to objects from hits and debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone attack, two people were killed and six others were injured, including two children,” Zelenskyy said.
U.S. Foreign Policy in the War Between Ukraine, Ukraine, and the Trump-Trump Era: Why Russia Needs to End the War
“I don’t want to sound ungrateful. The help of the U.S. has still been invaluable. But it has not been enough to let us win the war,” he said. “I’m just thinking how many lives could be saved if those restrictions were lifted a year ago?”
Maksym Sviezhentsev, who was speaking near the frontline in Ukraine, said he hoped the restrictions onATACMS wouldn’t be revoked by the administration.
The policy shift coincides with Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Trump claimed he could end the fighting between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours, but he hasn’t explained how.
The war has escalated since Ukrainian forces carried out a surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August. The attack was viewed as a breakthrough for Ukraine and a setback for Russia. North Korea sent thousands of its troops toKursk in October to help Russia fight off the Ukrainian incursion.
Zelenskyy said that Putin responds to strength and not diplomacy. We need to be strong. “We need to invest time in trying to force Russia to end the war rather than just talking to someone in Moscow.”
Russia launched missiles and drones at the Ukrainian energy system, Zelenskyy said, calling it one of the biggest attacks in the war so far.
In his video address on Sunday, Zelenskyy claimed thatUkraine’s long-range strike capabilities will be important to its victory. “Today, there’s a lot of talk in the media about us receiving permission for respective actions,” he said. “But strikes are not carried out with words. Such things are not announced. Missiles will speak for themselves.
The authorization marks a significant reversal in U.S. policy. Until recently, the Biden administration resisted allowing Ukraine to fire American long-range missiles into Russian territory for fear that it would only escalate the war.
The missiles, known as the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, can travel about 190 miles. Russian forces could be stopped from attacking Ukrainian cities if Ukrainian troops were allowed to strike Russia’s weapons storehouses and airfields.
British officials will likely follow suit in allowing Ukraine to use their Storm Shadow long-range missiles in Russia, the U.S. official said. These missiles are able to travel about 155 miles. The missiles contain US components, so the British needed U.S. approval.
A US official said the US was allowing the Ukrainians to use weapons on the same place where 10,000 North Korean troops were deployed.
For the first time, President Biden has given Ukraine the green light to use powerful American long-range weapons for strikes inside Russia, a U.S. official told NPR on Sunday.
