A teacher and a teenage student were killed, and five students and another teacher were injured, the authorities said. The shooter was found with a gunshot wound inside the school when police officers arrived and was pronounced dead soon after.

Chief Barnes said that there appeared to have been only one shooter, and investigators were looking for a possible motive. They talked to the suspect’s family who were cooperating after they searched her home.

Young women are much less likely to be suspects in school shootings. This year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database, nine shooting suspects were female compared to 249 who were male when gender was identified.

A mother of a teenage girl who was in a physics class where a shooting took place said that Abundant Life was often used as a kind of refuge for children who’d been harassed or struggled at other schools.

Ms. Smith said that members of the school community believed that the shooter was new to the private school this year and was among those who came in need of a life change. She said the population of students has grown dramatically since the H1N1 epidemic.

The police don’t know where the gun came from but Chief Barnes said that a handgun was recovered at the scene. The Madison police were working with federal investigators to identify where and when it had been purchased.

The two students are in critical condition, Chief Barnes said. A group of four people — three students and a teacher — were hospitalized with less serious injuries, and two of them have been discharged, he said.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said there are “no words to describe the devastation and heartbreak we feel today after the school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison this morning.”

Students are not allowed to shoot fake fingers on the playground, and the school does not own any firearms, according to Barbara Weis, the school’s elementary and school relations director.
