Climate Solutions Week Roundup: Five Easy Ways to Stretch Your Water Supply: A View from the St. George, Ohio, Public Radio Station
In the American West, St. George has a booming population. But climate change is making heat more intense and rain less reliable. Local leaders have a plan to stretch the water supply in the area by turning to its sewage supply. Recycled, treated wastewater will be sprayed onto lawns and farm fields, freeing up water for homes. The county currently uses some of its drinking water for outdoor irrigation. The sewage recycling plan can be pricey, but it may be worth it in the long run. Here’s a look at how it could work.
Five cheap and easy ways to reduce home energy consumption are just one of the stories NPR has for Climate Solutions Week.
Cynthia Erivo hosted the Tony Awards last night at Radio City Music Hall. This year, no one show swept the award ceremony — and for good reason, according to NPR culture editor Jennifer Vanasco. What do parents sing about their babies? A case study in Earthaven Ecovillage, North Carolina during Hurricane Helene and implications for the health and happiness of babies
In late September, Hurricane Helene caused devastating damage across North Carolina, resulting in over 100 deaths and billions of dollars in property losses. Earthaven Ecovillage, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and home to about 100 full-time residents, remained relatively unscathed compared to other areas like Asheville, N.C. When the community’s hydroelectric system was damaged, they activated their backup solar power system. Additionally, the residents were prepared with food supplies and had the skills to collaborate effectively during a crisis. A world of worsening climate disasters requires this ability to work together. There are photos of the residents of Earthaven Ecovillage, as well as more about how collectivity can be a climate solution.
A new study has found that singing to babies increases their health and happiness. Morning Edition wanted to further “investigate” the matter by asking listeners and readers what they sing to their little ones. Responses came in with many different reasons behind them. Some parents pull out the guitar for a full jam session, while others sing the songs their parents sang to them. Listen to these parents sing songs to their children or read the full transcript here.
