There will be protests as well as an Army parade in D.C

The U.S. Army Decay Parade in honor of Veterans Day: Trump’s comments on the event and the Pentagon response to the 2018 event

The local government of D.C. was accused of overcharging the federal government for the parade in the city by Trump. Police expenses alone would cost D.C. $13 million, according to the mayor at the time.

Some Democrats criticized the parade as a misuse of funds and a waste of money after it was announced. Other critics are unsettled by the display of military might.

The United States has held military parades to commemorate the end of major conflicts such as the Civil War, World War I and World War II. After the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan there were no national parades.

Trump is expected to observe the day’s events from the sidelines, but at one point, the president is scheduled to possibly receive a folded American flag. Such a move would be unusual, given that it’s traditionally presented to families of the fallen at military funerals.

More than 6,000 soldiers from every Army division are expected to participate in the parade. It will also showcase members of the National Guard, the Army Reserve, Special Operations Command, West Point and Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).

Trump first vied for a large-scale military parade in 2018 in honor of Veterans Day. That event was planned without tanks to minimize damage to city streets. But it was still expected to be costly, and the parade was later canceled.

Notably, when the Army turned 200-years-old in 1975, there was also no grand parade given that the country was still grappling with the aftermath of the Vietnam War.

Beyond Trump’s 250th Birthday: A Look at the Army’s Parade on Donald Trump’s Birthday, According to Hagan and Mansoor

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” last month, Trump said the cost waspeanuts compared to the value of doing it.

We have the most powerful missiles in the world. We have the greatest submarines in the world. There are army tanks in the world. We have some of the most powerful weapons in the world. He said they’re going to celebrate it.

Beyond troops, the parade will featureĀ an estimated 50 aircraft, 150 vehicles, 34 horses, two mules and one canine, Hagan said earlier this month. The canine, a Blue Heeler named Doc Holliday who has frequented military parades and celebrations, comes from the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Cavalry Detachment at Fort Cavazos, Texas.

According to Peter Mansoor, a professor of American military history at Ohio State University, animals have played an important role throughout various conflicts. Dogs help sniff out bombs. Units in difficult terrain have received bullet proof containers from mules.

To close out the parade, the Army’s Golden Knights demonstration parachute team, based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, is expected to perform a jump, member station WUNC reported.

“We had a lot of planes going over and we had a lot of military might, and it was really a beautiful thing to see,” Trump said in 2017. “They had representatives from different wars and different uniforms. It was done very well.

Some White House officials wanted Eisenhower to hold a military parade to match the Soviet Union, but he refused, according to presidential historian Michael Beschloss.

Beschloss said that Eisenhower said that they were the pre-eminent power on Earth. “For us to think we can do something like the Soviets are doing in Red Square would make us look weak.”

Some projected the overall price tag could climb up to $92 million, NPR reported at the time, though then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis disputed that figure.

More than 800 cities across the country will have “No Kings” events to protest against the Trump administration on the day of the military parade in D.C.

On Presidents Day and in April, the group orchestrated nationwide protests to push back against a range of Trump’s policies that included mass deportations and funding cuts for federal programs.

He said those who wanted to protest will be met with a lot of force. I haven’t heard about the protest, but I know that the people that hate our country will be met with a lot of force.

The First Marines Arrive: The Louisiana Marines Meet the Regime of Protests in the Post-Democracy Era

About 8,800 troops marched while more than 200,000 spectators lined the streets. In order to allow tanks to pass more easily, the street lights were taken down.

“There was a fairly heated debate within George H.W. Bush’s administration as to whether it was appropriate,” Joshua Zeitz, a historian and contributing editor for Politico, told NPR’s Consider This earlier this month.

Zeitz said that Bush ultimately supported the parade in order to help Americans overcome “Vietnam syndrome,” referring to the public’s negative view of the military following the Vietnam War.

“We respect, and will defend, the right to peacefully protest, but we will not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state,” Kehoe said in a statement earlier this week. In the event of chaos, the State of Missouri is taking a proactive approach to help local law enforcement.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered National Guard troops to San Antonio and Austin ahead of expected protests. In Missouri the governor activated the National Guard as a precautionary measure.

The Wilshire Federal Building is one of the buildings that the Marines are expected to protect but won’t have arresting powers.

The events are taking place in the wake of the President sending Marines to Los Angeles, as well as the Governor’s order for the National Guard to be activated against him. The first group of 700 Marines arrived on Friday.

The Los Angeles immigration protests have been wildly ill-posed during the last two weeks of rioting in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles

Protesters have generally behaved well, but some have clashed with law enforcement and vandalized buildings. Police have arrested dozens of people across the country.

There were demonstrations in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York this week. Protests in Los Angeles have been ongoing all week in response to the administration ramping up immigration enforcement in the city.
