Vance Boelter, the 57-year-old Minnesota House Speaker, and his wife, Melissa Hortman, were killed in a shooting on Saturday
The man suspected of killing the lawmaker was arrested. Investigators say 57-year-old Vance Boelter posed as a police officer and fatally shot former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, inside their home on Saturday. He is a suspect in the shooting of the Democratic state senator and his wife. The list of names and addresses of public officials was found in a vehicle Boelter left in the driveway.
The annual G7 summit is taking place this week in the Canadian Rockies with President Donald Trump and other economic powers in attendance. The gathering comes at a tense time, as the Israel-Iran conflict escalates, the Ukraine-Russia war continues, and Trump has imposed tariffs on all of his fellow G7 countries.
The U.S. Army celebrated its 250th anniversary on Saturday in Washington, D.C. The event was held on Trump’s birthday. Critics viewed the parade as a politicization of the nation’s armed forces. Some people joined the No Kings protests in countries around the world. See photos of what the protests looked like from Texas to France, and read three takeaways from the parade.

In a post on social media, Trump condemned the shootings in Minnesota, saying that “such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America.”
And last summer, President Trump, who has often been criticized for stoking the intense emotions that can lead to political violence in the first place, survived an assassination attempt that left his ear bloodied and killed a person in the crowd.
Evans said Sunday that if officers hadn’t encountered Boelter at Hortman’s house, forcing him to abandon his vehicle, “I have every confidence that this would have continued throughout the day.”
Officials also said they found “No Kings” flyers in the car, a reference to the anti-Trump protests that happened around the country Saturday. Many people still attended and the protests were relatively peaceful despite Minnesota officials urging residents to avoid them.
Protests in the U.S. remained mostly peaceful, despite a case of reckless driving in Virginia that left one person injured. A man was arrested in Texas for making threats.
And on Sunday, Salt Lake City police announced the death of an “innocent bystander” who had been shot at a downtown protest, allegedly by a member of the event’s peacekeeping team who had been aiming at a different target: a person brandishing a rifle at demonstrators.
Authorities have yet to announce a possible motive for the attacks, but Minn. Gov. Tim Walz called the shootings “an act of targeted political violence.”
Last year, the Brennan Center for Justice, a policy think tank, released a report saying nearly half of the state lawmakers it surveyed had experienced threats or attacks in recent years. The U.S. Capitol Police has seen a rise in threats against members of Congress.

When a Minnesota State Lawmaker and a Republican Senator Come Together: John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in the Aftermath of a Shooting
According to police, they responded to the shooting at Hoffman’s house, then went to the home of Hortman. There was a car with emergency lights in front, and a man dressed in all blue at the door with black body armor. Officials say that man shot at police, but was able to get away.
Earlier that same morning, Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot at their home in nearby Champlin, Minn. In a statement shared with Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Sunday night, Yvette said John “is enduring many surgeries right now and is closer every hour to being out of the woods.”
At the Sunday night press conference, Bruley stated that Boelter was seen ” running into the woods” when officers searched the area near Green Isle. After about an hour and a half, with the help of multiple SWAT teams and a State Patrol helicopter, authorities closed in on him and were “able to call him out to us.”
Law enforcement in Minnesota have arrested the man wanted in the attack early Saturday morning that killed one state lawmaker and left another wounded.
