In Southern California, the fires started to spread to Hollywood Hills

The National Weather Service said there is a critical risk of fire in the area because of dry vegetation, high winds and low humidity.

“My Administration will do everything it can to support the response,” he said. “I urge the residents of the Pacific Palisades and the surrounding areas of Los Angeles to stay vigilant and listen to local officials.”

He said that California had secured a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, which would reimburse up to 75% of eligible costs to suppress the fires.

Santa Ana winds blow toward the coast, which fueled the fires this week. They are relatively common in the region, but not at this strength.

More than 200,000 customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties were without power early Wednesday morning. Power lines can be downed and cause sparks to ignite, so fighting authorities usually turn them off.

The structure of the schools and the playing fields of the high school were engulfed in flames, according to the LA Times. The district said the latter school is not in session.

Additionally, five Los Angeles schools will be closed Wednesday, and a sixth school has temporarily relocated and joined with another. It is not clear whether the district will make a decision about closing the schools Thursday.

The Eaton and Hurst Fires in Los Angeles County. Newsom’s Day in the Life of a Family Revisited

“This time of year traditionally has not been fire season, but now we disabuse any notion that there is a season,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a video posted to X. “It’s year-round in the state of California.”

An order for people to leave is when the fire poses an immediate threat to life, while a warning is when there is a potential threat to life and/or property.

The Eaton fire in Los Angeles County started at about 10:30 p.m. local time, while the Hurst fire also started at 10:30 p.m. Late Tuesday night, the Hurst fire was reported in the Sylmar neighborhood north of Los Angeles, leading the L.A. Fire Department to issue evacuation orders near where Interstate 5 meets the 14 and 210 freeways.

With firefighters having not contained any portion of the fires and high winds forecast overnight, anxiety grew over what conditions residents and officials will face as Wednesday breaks.

The governor said more than 7,500 personnel are responding to the fires. They are using helicopters, water tenders, air tankers and dozers to fight the fires.

“We just finished cleaning up from the Rose Parade of all things, and now this,” she said. “We had the big thing that showed off how wonderful life is here followed immediately by something showing off how awful life can be.”

Only two of the other 12 fires in California have been completely contained, according to the Cal Fire.

The Sunset fire broke out Wednesday night, encroaching on the Hollywood Hills and prompting mandatory evacuations in notable parts of the area, such as Mulholland Drive, Hollywood Boulevard and Runyon Canyon Park. By early Thursday morning, most of the evacuation zone had been lifted, said the Los Angeles Fire Department.

In Los Angeles County, firefighters battled to control a blaze that burned more than 30,000 acres and forced the mass departure of people.

A wind advisory will remain in effect until at least 2 p.m. PT on Friday. The NWS advises residents to stay at least 100 feet away from downed power lines and call 911.

“Every once in a while we get a much stronger Santa Ana wind event like what we had over the past 24 to 36 hours, in which case we ended up with a widespread, life-threatening and destructive windstorm.”

“The typical strengths of the winds are on the order of, say, 30 to 60 mph when they occur, a couple times a year,” Ariel Cohen, chief meteorologist for the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard, told NPR’s Morning Edition.

Winds have gradually weakened since their peak earlier Wednesday, when the NWS recorded speeds as high as 90 mph in Henninger Flats and 89 mph at Saddle Peak.

“The confluence of factors — wind, fire and smoke — have created dangerous, complex situations that present unsafe conditions for our school communities,” the district said.

The Disaster Preparedness Plan for California During the Biden ’91 Redistricting Event and the President’s South-Carolina Address

On Wednesday, President Biden made a major disaster declaration, which provides federal funding to affected residents, by way of “grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.”

“Southern California, we are with you. The president canceled a trip to Italy on Wednesday to focus on the fire response.
