Millions of Americans will be in danger of dying this weekend and into next week as a result of the cold weather. During the winter, the polar vortex, which is an area of low pressure and cold air that surrounds the Earth’s poles, can expand. Areas like the South and Mid-Atlantic, which are unaccustomed to freezing, will not be spared. Washington D.C. will be the place where the cold air of the season will be during Trump’s second swearing-in. It is expected to be the coldest Inauguration Day since President Ronald Reagan’s in 1985 when, by noon, temperatures only reached 7 degrees, according to historical data.

“As I understand it, we shut down. It is possible that come January 20, 21st, 22nd, we might be in a different world,” said TikTok’s lawyer Noel Francisco to the court last week, suggesting Trump may be able to put the ban on pause.

TikTok’s Life in the Wild: The Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, threatening app’s existence in the U.S

But to TikTok executives, that is merely a symbolic life raft, since ByteDance has consistently indicated that the platform, China’s first global social media hit, is not for sale. Furthermore, export control laws in China prevent TikTok’s algorithm from being sold unless Beijing regulators bless the transaction, something China experts have said the country is not likely to do.

“I mean, do we suppose that the best cure for problematic speech would be counter speech?” asked Gorsuch, adding that TikTok had raised the possibility of an app warning of potential manipulation by China.

U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, representing the federal government, quickly shot that down with this analogy: “Imagine if you walked into a store and I had a sign that said one of 1 million products in this store causes cancer,” she told the court. “That’s not going to put you on notice that what product you use is actually putting your health at risk.”

The Biden White House said in a statement that it would be up to the incoming administration to implement the law after the Supreme Court’s ruling. “The administration knows that actions to implement the law will be taken by the next administration, which takes office on Monday,” she said.

All eyes are on Donald Trump. He asked that the Supreme Court delay a ruling to allow his administration to negotiate a solution that would resolve the national security concerns.

The president can delay the ban by 90 days if progress is made toward a sale away from ByteDance.

On Friday, Trump posted on his platform that he is not making a decision yet. “The Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it. I have time to review the situation after my decision on TikTok is made. Stay tune!

“It’s a dream come true, but what it takes to be a reality” — ByteDance: How change will the landscape?

“When push comes to shove and these restrictions take effect, I think it will fundamentally change the landscape with respect to what ByteDance is willing to consider, and it might be just the jolt that Congress expected the company would need to actually move forward with the divestiture process,” she said.
