Families of people deported from Venezuela are in dispute over gang claims

Juan Tern and the deportation of four men to El Salvador despite the Trump administration’s questions about their deportations to the U.S.

A photo that Juan Tern received confirms what he feared and his son was one of the people sent to a maximum security prison despite a judge ordering the flights to turn around.

The Trump administration has continued to stonewall the judge’s questions about the deportations to El Salvador. “The government is not being terribly cooperative at this point,” said the judge, James E. Boasberg, at a hearing on Friday. I will find out who was responsible for violating my order.

NPR talked to the families of four men believed to be in El Salvador. None of them had previous criminal records in the U.S. Three of the four are believed to have signed their voluntary departure orders, a move that would in theory allow them to come to the U.S. at a later time if approved.

A source in the State Department says that the administration is unwilling to provide any evidence for the claims of the men being members of Tren de Aragua. The source is afraid that the men will die in prison, given the harsh conditions, and that they will never go to trial. The source requested anonymity fearing retribution and because they are not authorized to speak publicly.

This week, the White House Press Secretary was asked about it. The White House was not going to reveal details of a counterterrorism operation.

The agents who investigated the migrants were very confident in their actions and had evidence to back it up, said Leavitt.

But in an interview on Wednesday with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he has “confidence that El Salvador runs an excellent prison system. We engaged them on this process because of that.

“My biggest surprise is when I saw the video and I saw my son’s face,” she said in Spanish. I can’t say what happened to my son in his eyes.

“They don’t have to ruin the life of a young man who has never been in prison, has never been a criminal,” Yamarte said. He’s worked hard, and I taught him that.

“Trump’s government said they were going after the worst criminals, so we imagined he was going after someone who had killed people in the U.S.,” Casique said, adding that her son doesn’t have a criminal record in the U.S. or Venezuela. She gave NPR an official document from Venezuela saying that she doesn’t have a criminal record.

But the family was somewhat relieved — they really thought Garcia was going to be sent to Venezuela. But a month later, on Saturday, he called his mom to tell her he was about to leave the detention facility in Laredo, Texas.

But those airplanes never landed in Venezuela. She later learned flights had landed in El Salvador. Her children identify their brother in social media videos.

She said they were “very naive” because he followed the rules. We were confident that the U.S. would respect his rights.

On Tuesday the US agreed to resume deportation flights to Venezuela, a day after it was announced that the program that had allowed hundreds of thousands of Cubans and other Latin American migrants to work in the United States would be ended.

Saturday’s agreement could help Mr. Trump accelerate his plans for mass deportations, one of the central promises of his campaign. He has already enlisted military planes, sent people to third countries far from their homes and invoked the wartime law to achieve that goal. Arrests inside the country are up sharply relative to those in the Biden administration, but they are well below the levels Mr. Trump and his immigration advisers want.

The President and his allies called for the judge to be impeached after he issued an order restricting deportations. The rapidly escalating spat caused Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. of the Supreme Court to weigh in with a rare statement, admonishing the calls for the judge’s impeachment. There was concern of a constitutional crisis.

Mr. Trump appeared excited by the idea of sending vandals to prison in El Salvador for 20 years, warning that they could be there for 20 years if caught.
