Shedding Light on the “Forbidden” Case of Abrego Garcia, the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Ambassador Chris Van Hollen
Chris Van Hollen traveled to El Salvadoran this week to try to see his cousin who was deported to the US despite being in the country legally. But the Maryland Democrat said El Salvador’s government declined his requests for both.
The Trump administration designated the Foreign Terrorist Organization, or FTO, which they claimed Abrego was a member of, as a crime gang. Abrego’s lawyers argue that he does not have a criminal record, and that he is not a member of the gang.
The situation galvanized Van Hollen, to try to visit Abrego, who is being held in a notorious mega-prison known as CECOT.
“The goal of this mission is to let the Trump administration, to let the government of El Salvador, know that we are going to keep fighting to bring Abrego Garcia home until he returns to his family,” Van Hollen said from the airport. We’re going to fight because this is not justice.
Van Hollen told Ulloa he could not arrange a phone or video call with Abrego, but suggested the American embassy might be able to. He said he wants to ask the embassy to aid in his fight to bring Abrego back.
She accused Van Hollen of potentially using taxpayer dollars to pay for his trip and criticized Democrats for supporting AbregoGarcia’s release even though she said he would make Americans safer.
Leavitt was joined at the press briefing by Maryland resident Patty Morin, whose daughter Rachel was raped and murdered in 2023 by a fugitive from El Salvador, Victor Martinez-Hernandez, 24, who was convicted of the crime on Monday. Morin was critical of Van Hollen.
“To have a senator from Maryland who didn’t even acknowledge, or barely acknowledge, my daughter and the brutal death that she endured, leaving her five children without a mother … so that he can use my taxpayer money to fly to El Salvador to bring back someone that’s not even an American citizen?” she said.
The statement from Van Hollen’s office thanked the people who made the verdict possible. He stated the country could improve public safety and border security while also supporting immigrant communities and respecting the rights of individuals who are here legally.
Reply to Abrego Garcia’s Correspondence with President Trump: A Case for “Homegrown Criminals in the United States”
Two people posted photos on social media of themselves touring the site. They each spoke highly of Trump’s deportation agenda, with Moore saying he leaves “even more determined” to support the president’s efforts.
In two separate letters this week, Reps. Robert Garcia of California, Maxwell Frost of Florida and Delia Ramirez of Illinois, asked the chair of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., to authorize a Congressional Member Delegation to visit CECOT.
Garcia and Frost wrote that a “Congressional delegation would allow Committee Members to conduct a welfare check on Mr. Abrego Garcia, as well as others held at CECOT.”
They said that congressional oversight is needed after President Trump expressed his desire to send “homegrown criminals” to this facility.
Trump said that Powell’s termination can’t come fast enough. Powell says he can’t be fired by the president over policy disagreements.
If the Trump Justice Department did not pursue contempt charges, then he would appoint an outside prosecutor to do so. The judge presiding over the specific Abrego Garcia case, Paula Xinis, said she’s “gotten nothing” from the administration, which she ordered to show evidence of what it’s doing to bring the man back. The appeals court rejected the government’s request for a stay and ordered them to give testimony about what they have or have not done to return Abrego to the US.
Which one is weighing out? At the end of the day, a true constitutional crisis would come if the Trump administration exhausts its appeals and defies the Supreme Court, if it rules against the administration. If Trump follows through on his idea of sending “grown up” criminals from the U.S., maybe that will happen.
The Supreme Court reprimanded courts for not respecting the Executive Branch in foreign affairs, but it also said the administration had to facilitate the man’s return.
“No court in the United States has a right to conduct the foreign policy of the United States,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters during that meeting in the Oval Office with Bukele. I am not sure what the confusion is. This individual has a citizenship in El Salvador. He was in the United States illegally and was returned to his country.
The week was dominated by news about President Trump and the continued struggle over the narrative around Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was illegally deported to El Salvador. But there was also continued concern around Trump’s tariffs — with the Federal Reserve chair saying they’re likely to lead to higher prices — and the tension between the scientific establishment and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who made some big pronouncements during his first news conference as health and human services secretary.
The presidents of El Rica and the US met at the White House on Monday. The president’s inner circle and the Salvadoran president played a faux blame game on the deported Maryland man.
The same federal judge, who has now bucked the Trump administration over its deportation policies multiple times, James Boasberg, this week said there was “probable cause” for contempt charges against the administration. He wants the Trump team to give him some answers about why they didn’t comply with his order to turn the plane around, until Wednesday.
Can There Be Causes Of Autism? – Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Nearing a Constitutional Crisis: What are We Do Now?
Could there be environmental causes (other than vaccines)? That’s Kennedy’s theory. But science is about dispassionately letting evidence dictate answers, not letting preconceived answers dictate science.
For years, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has cast doubt on the safety of vaccines and given credence to the contention that they might cause autism. That’s despite the fact that research thoroughly debunks the idea and links other, non-vaccine-related factors to a father’s age. He promised to discover the true cause of autism by September despite years of research and difficulties in finding definitive answers.
“One of the things I think we need to move away from today is this ideology that this diagnosis, rather the relentless increases, are simply artifacts of better diagnoses, better recognition,” Kennedy said. He also said: “Doctors and therapists in the past weren’t stupid; they weren’t missing all these cases. The epidemic is happening. We’re going to find the answer with external factors and environmental exposures.
He disagrees with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which said this week that there may be part of the increase in the number of children found to have a brain disorder due to increased diagnoses and better diagnostic tools.

Abrego Garcia is wanted in El Salvador, a judge’s ruling affirms that he is a gang member flimsy
So, for now, he said, the Fed will wait and watch. It could be waiting and watching because how quickly Trump changed his mind could be a good indicator of how long it could take.
The head of the Federal Reserve said that Trump’s tariffs were larger than anticipated and that they are likely to lead to higher inflation.
“Evidence’ against Abrego Garcia consisted of nothing more than his Chicago Bulls hat and hoodie, and a vague, uncorroborated allegation from a confidential informant claiming he belonged to MS-13’s ‘Western’ clique in New York — a place he has never lived,” she said in a ruling.
He could face death or danger if sent back to El Salvadoran, as an immigration court found in 2019. The judge called the evidence that he is a gang member flimsy.
