The CBS News Podcastcast Live Debate: Tim Walz vs. JD Vance in the Blue-Wall, MN, Oct. 1
Vice presidential candidates Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Republican Sen. JD Vance will face off on Oct. 1 in a debate hosted by CBS News. The two hold similar roles in their respective campaigns: to appeal to voters in the “Blue Wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.
It is the first presidential debate since Harris became the Democratic nominee and after Joe Biden became the party’s candidate. After Biden had a bad debate, he made a decision to step down as VP and support his VP, which led to a fracturing of the support within the party and the decision to endorse his VP.
Harris has linked Trump’s platform to the policy proposals for a potential second term put forward by The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. The plan would increase executive power and include more restrictions on abortion access, which is something Trump tried to distance himself from.
Trump’s stance on this issue has been muddy. He makes comments about abortion that clash with his past beliefs while he is president. Recently, he acknowledged that Florida’s six-week ban was too restrictive, then clarified shortly after that he would not support the state’s upcoming ballot measure that, if passed, would safeguard access to abortions up until fetal viability.
Harris has been putting an emphasis on protecting reproductive rights while campaigning, and she’s likely to address it Tuesday night. In the run up to the debate, the Harris-Walz campaign launched a bus tour that would make 50 stops in key states in favor of reproductive freedom.
There will be no audience, and microphones will be turned off unless a candidate gives a speech. Only moderators can ask Harris and Trump questions, and there won’t be opening statements.
A campaign official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, that the pool would be able to hear what the candidates are saying and the network could unmute both microphones if there is significant crosstalk. The official said that the moderator will warn the candidates to stop frequently. “Our understanding of these things helped inform our decision to accept muted mics,” the official said.
It was originally proposed by the Biden campaign before the debate and was seen as a way to alter Trump’s debate style. The former president has interrupted in these settings to the point he has hurt his campaign in the past. The technical change helped make Trump seem more controlled.
The First 10 Minutes of Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump: Broadcasting the Debate on Facebook, Twitter and the Internet
You can watch on ABC, the ABC News Live streaming service, Disney Plus, or the internet if you so choose. The debate will be broadcast on TV networks and channels.
Since then, a lot has happened. Trump survived an assassination attempt, he accepted the GOP presidential nomination, Biden dropped out of the race and Harris then took over and clinched the Democratic party’s nomination.
The playing field is different than it was two months ago when President Biden’s dismal debate performance spurred a wave of concern over his ability to defeat Trump, the Republican nominee.
Patrick Healy, the deputy Opinion editor, hosted an online conversation with the Times Opinion columnists Jamelle Bouie, Ross Douthat, David French, Michelle Goldberg and Tressie McMillan Cottom about Tuesday’s debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
Tech isn’t likely to be a major focus of this debate, but since it’s one of the first opportunities we’ve had to hear from Harris since she took on the nomination, we’ll be listening for clues on where she falls on issues including antitrust, a TikTok ban, kids online safety, and more.
Candidates have two minutes to answer questions and two minutes to rebut. There’s also another minute to clarify or follow-up. They won’t have access to prewritten notes or their campaign staff onstage, but they will have a pen and paper to jot things down.
ABC said a virtual coin flip last week determined who will be at which podium and the order of the two-minute closing statements. Trump won the coin flip and chose to offer his closing statement last. Harris got to choose her podium position, which will be on the right side of the screen.

The Miami-Dade Police Department: Tyreek Hill vs. the Miami Dolphins: How to Make Wheat Bread Resilient to Climate Change
The Miami-Dade Police Department released body camera footage showing the dramatic encounter between officers and Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. It shows officers forcibly remove him from his car less than a minute after pulling him over. The officers locked him up for nearly 20 minutes. Hill was pulled over by the police after he was spotted driving a black sports car. He handed over his license and rolled up his window. A verbal disagreement sparked over the closed window and an officer then yelled at Hill to get out of the vehicle. The issue grew from there. The lawyer for Hill said they would be pursuing legal action after the officer placed on administrative duty over the incident.

A team of scientists and bakers in the Pacific Northwest are searching for ways to make whole wheat bread resilient to a warming world — and more delicious. The Washington State University bread lab makes loaves out of different types of wheat. It was specifically developed to survive the intense weather brought on by climate change. The Bread Lab was started by Stephen Jones, a wheat breeder and home baker. The details of just that, as well as how it might impact the future of bread making, are here.
