Rage against machine learning that is being driven by profit
A study conducted by Carnegie Mellon University has found that keeping publicly funded independent academic researchers at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) progress is crucial for the safe development of the technology. The research also found that companies want more people to be able to work with their AI models so they’re moving towards open access.
A guide to the nature index
The Supplement to Nature Index shows the number of institutions in Artificial Intelligence (AI) using natural language models and the increase in authors. It shows that the top institutions in AI are shown in tables based on the change in output from the year before to the year after. Drug-resistant infections will increase by 70% by the year 2050
A report by the Global Fund for Disease Prevention and Control (GEMS) has said that people living in low- & middle-income countries are more likely to die of infections that are resistant to antibiotics than their counterparts in high-income countries. The report estimated that by 2050, 1.91 million deaths could be caused by antimicrobial resistance and 8.22 million could die from illnesses associated with it.
A tailored approach is needed to tackle the problem of antimicrobial resistance
A study published in The Lancet has claimed that at least 5,00,000 deaths could be avoided globally through strategies such as providing safe water and good sanitation, isolating individuals with resistant bacteria and increasing the frequency of handwashing in hospitals. It added that the largest reduction in deaths would come from improving people’s access to antibiotics that are not available in many countries.
