Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will be sworn in as the country’s interim Prime Minister on Thursday, after former PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. Hasina stepped down after months of protests against a quota system for government jobs that critics said favoured people with connections to Hasina’s party. She has been accused of nepotism and corruption.

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef cooked at temperatures higher than any it has experienced in at least four centuries, according to climate researchers. They focused on temperatures between January and March when waters surrounding Australia’s Great Barrier Reef tend to be the hottest. Previous research has estimated that even a two-degree rise could be enough to wipe out 99% of the world’s coral reefs.

Researchers looked at chemical composition of coral in the reef and figured out how much it had changed over time. They also developed a model that suggests such temperatures are very unlikely to occur without human-induced climate change.

US Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris on Wednesday named Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Walz, who served in the Minnesota National Guard, has served as the Governor of the Midwestern state since January. Walz is a former high school geography teacher and an assistant on a state title-winning football team.

A US judge has ruled that Google has unlawfully maintained its monopoly in search by using anti-competitive deals to keep rivals from gaining traction. The judge ruled that there is only one Dominant Player in both general search and general search text ads. Google could be fined up to $950 million for violating antitrust laws, according to The Verge.

US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ support among independents has increased by 9 percentage points since President Joe Biden exited the race, according to a poll. Trump is still more trusted on the economy but only by 3 points over Harris (51%-40%) compared to 9 points over Biden (54%-45%) in June. Harris is also winning independents.

US Justice Department has sued Google over alleged anti-competitive practices in search and e-commerce. It said Google abused its market power by favouring its own products and apps over competitors. The department’s antitrust case will be heard in federal court in San Francisco. Apple had sued Google in September last year for abusing its market dominance in search and e-commerce.
