SpaceX said that a liquid oxygen leak developed on the second stage of its Falcon 9 rocket, which was carrying Starlink satellites, during the launch on Thursday night. The rocket’s upper stage engine, which was supposed to be used to raise perigee, couldn’t be performed due to an issue with the engine. SpaceX said it will investigate the incident in conjunction with the FAA.

AT&T said in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it learned about the data breach on April 19. The data does not include substance or time stamps of calls and texts or birthdays, AT&T said. “While the data does not include customer names, there are often ways…to find the name associated with a specific telephone number,” it added.

Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine and ColosSAL Biosciences have recreated the DNA of the woolly mammoth, a species that lived more than 60,000 years ago. The researchers found nearly intact chromosomes in 52,000-year-old skin samples from the woolly mammoth. They’re trying to recreate the three-dimensional structure of the DNA, including the chromosomes, of an extinct creature.
Scientists are working on the genes of gutbacteria in living mice
Scientists have created a method that could be used to directly edit genes of specific bacteria in mice’s guts, which has previously been difficult to accomplish due to the complexity of this environment. The tool was able to edit over ninety percent of an E. coli strain in mice guts with other work showing it could be used to edit genes in other strains.

Boeing will pay a quarter-billion dollar fine after pleading guilty
Boeing, which agreed to plead guilty to misleading regulators about the cause of two crashes of its 737 Max 8 jets that killed 763 people, will be responsible for proposing candidates for an outside monitor, US prosecutors said. “To me an independent compliance monitor being appointed is a significant step…It does signal that the department wants some sort of outside oversight,” a lawyer said.

Patrick Vallance, the newly appointed UK’s Minister of State for Science and Engineering, has worked as the government’s Chief Scientific Adviser during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vallance, who was also a member of the UK’s House of Lords, worked with Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a science adviser during the coronavirus pandemic. He also worked as a professor at Queen Mary University of London.
