It made landfall in Mexico with its sights set on Texas
Hurricane Beryl killed at least four people in Barbados, the Grenadines and Grenada on Thursday. The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds were clocked at 115 mph, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The hurricane is expected to weaken before making landfall in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico, on Saturday. Mexican authorities said they have evacuated some small coastal communities.
Why climate change makes hurricanes more dangerous
Hurricane Beryl, a Category 5 storm earlier this week, has strengthened to a Category 3 storm as it nears Mexico’s Tulum. The US Hurricane Center said that the storm’s centre is about 125 kilometres east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest at 16 mph (around 26kmph). It is expected to make a landfall in Yucatan Peninsula on Friday.
Climate change is making a storm like Beryl more dangerous
Haiti PM Dickon Mitchell said that there may be “more fatalities” in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. “The possibility that theremay be more fatalities remains a grim reality as movement is still highly restricted,” he added. Meanwhile, Jamaica PM Andrew Holness said that the country has banned all non-essential travel for the next 48 hours, to prevent any criminal activity.
Semantic decoding at single-cell resolution
Scientists have found that a neuron’s action potential activity changes in response to each word heard within one of the semantic domains. They found that an SI of 0 would mean there’s no difference in activity across any of the semantic domains and an SI of 1.0 would indicate that a neuron changed its action potential activity only when hearing words within one of the semantic domains.
The storm roars toward Jamaica after hitting the southeast Caribbean islands
Hurricane Beryl, the first Atlantic storm to reach Category 5 strength, is expected to hit Jamaica on Tuesday morning. National Hurricane Center director Michael Brennan said people should prepare for “multiple life-threatening” hazards from Beryl. He added that hurricane conditions are expected to reach the coast of Jamaica around midday and that strong winds starting in the morning will make outside preparations difficult.
The script of MaXXXine has been changed to give you something fresh to scream about
Talking about ‘MaXXXine’, director David West said, “I wanted to make a trilogy where you didn’t have to see the other movies.” He added, “That alienates a huge portion of the audience who would never watch a movie like ‘X’, so they won’t see ‘Pearl’. I didn’t want people to think they couldn’t see ‘Pearl’ because of the idea of ‘X’.”
There are conversations about the moment
Boeing’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, which is slated to fly astronauts to the International Space Station, will undergo extensive tests at NASA’s White New Mexico Test Facility this week. NASA said it will conduct simulations of dockings, launches, and landing burns to see if they can duplicate the problems. Starliner had to be diverted to a launchpad on May 6 due to a helium leak.
The Biden administration has proposed new heat protections for workers
US President Joe Biden has proposed a rule to protect the country’s employees from heatexposure. It proposes to require that companies provide a minimum 15-minute paid rest break every two hours if the heat index is over 90C, as well as monitor employees for signs of heat-related illness or symptoms. The proposal is an next step in the process to receive public input.
The sentencing of the former President in New York is delayed
The US Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that former US President Donald Trump has immunity from prosecution for his core constitutional powers and does not have immunity for unofficial acts. However, it said that it will send the case back to trial judge to determine which, if any of Trump’s actions, were part of his official duties and thus were protected from prosecution.
