What do researchers think of the fact-checking on Facebook?

Facebook’s fact-checking platform Meta has added a ‘False: Verified by Animal Poltico’ label to posts after they are rated as “false” by third party fact-checkers. Meta said the move was to counter fact checkers’ political bias and censorship. Facebook had created the Third Party Fact-Checkers programme to address misinformation on its platforms.

Meta X-ification has been documented

Facebook has said that it will no longer let “hateful” posts on its platform be reported to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The social networking platform said it will no longer allow posts that “promote offline violence”. It added that it’ll continue to allow for fact-checking of hateful content, including posts about President-electDonald Trump.

The X-ification of Meta is related to X-ification

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Meta, the platform that enables fact-checking of news, will be shut down “in the near future”. The social media platform had partnered with fact-checking organisations and newsrooms across the globe to tackle fake news. Meta’s global policy chief Joel Kaplan had said the platform has decided to stop collaborating with fact-checking organisations.

The Supreme Court protects the future of moderation

The US Supreme Court has returned the Facebook and Moody cases to lower courts for analysis. The case involves two laws passed by legislators in Florida and Texas, prohibiting social media sites from banning political candidates or limiting their reach. SCOTUS said the lower courts had focused too narrowly on what the laws applied to multiple companies and multiple products.
