Russian President Vladimir Putin has apologised for what he called a “tragic incident” following the crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in Kazakhstan that killed 38 people, but stopped short of acknowledging that his country was responsible. The Kremlin said that air defence systems were firing near Grozny, the regional capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, where a plane was attempting to land.

There are deaths and survivors in the crashes of the Azerbaijani airliner

A Russian man who was on board the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 plane that crashed in Kazakhstan’s Aktau on Wednesday, killing at least 37 people, has been identified, the Azerbaijani state media said. He had travelled to Russia to visit his family, it added. The plane was on its way to the Russian city of Grozny from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku.
