Many flee war in Lebanon as Israel expands bombardment

Israeli airstrikes killed at least six people across Lebanon and the Gaza Strip on Sunday, a day after Israel launched its ground operation in the country’s south. The Lebanon state-run National News Agency said the area was hit by over 30 strikes overnight, the heaviest bombardment since September. Hezbollah said that it successfully targeted Israeli soldiers with a large rocket salvo.

US Ambassador to Israel Austin Austin said the US supports Israel’s ground incursion in Lebanon but is warning Israel about “mission creep”. The US has not restricted the duration of Israel’s incursion but that it’s concerned about a regional escalation. Israeli troops on Tuesday launched an operation targeting Hezbollah military compounds close to the border.

Iran on Sunday fired missiles towards Israel, the country’s Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said. “Iran will continue to take all necessary steps to defend its territory from Israeli aggression…We call upon Israel to restraint,” he added. Earlier, Zarif said that Iran could respond to Israel’s attack on Lebanon’s Hezbollah with a missile strike against Israel.

Israel is preparing for a possible larger ground invasion of Lebanon

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday called for an investigation into the assassination of Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah in a strike by the United Nations (UN) on Saturday. “The government of Israel has decided to request an investigation into the assassination of Sheik Nasrallah,” he added. At least 15 people were killed in the strikes, Lebanon’s Civil Defence said.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday said that the group’s military chief, Ibrahim Akil, was killed by Israel in an air strike in Lebanon’s Beirut on Saturday. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and a commander from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were killed in an air strike in Lebanon, Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency said on Saturday. Nasrallah’s son, Hadi, was killed in battling with the Israeli army in 1997 and he was also designated a terrorist by the US in 2000.

Netanyahu’s statement comes after Israel carried out airstrikes in Lebanon and fired missiles into Gaza. Earlier, Netanyahu had claimed that Lebanon-based Hezbollah was trying to establish a military presence in the region through Hamas in Gaza.
