The US government has asked UK’s National Institute for Health Care and Excellence to provide it with additional data on the effectiveness of stem cell transplants and gene therapy for treating sickle-cell disease. The developers were asked for further data after they determined that Casgevy was not cost-effective. The US Food and Drug Administration had approved the first genetic treatments for sickle cell last year.

The study found that both the treatments were effective in the treatment of severe sickle cell disease. Both transplants and gene therapies require chemotherapy before the treatment. However, it added that both therapies can’t be considered a cure for sickle-cell disease.
