Trump’s strikes on Iran were not authorized

The War Powers resolution of 1973 was passed in the wake of the Vietnam war to allow Congress to claw back some authority they had lost during the war. The resolution requires the US President to seek authorisation from Congress before launching a war. While the resolution does not require Congress to issue a formal declaration of war, presidents have long sent US forces into combat.
