We use the past for clues about what will be said in the address

What will Trump say in his Tuesday address? We look to the past for some clues. The story of Rush Limbaugh and Nancy Pelosi

But the political dynamics this time are remarkably different from 2020, Groves said. There will be a Republican speaker in front of Trump.

Even before Trump spoke a word of his final State of the Union address, it was off to a contentious start. Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reached out for a handshake, but Trump left her hanging.

Trump’s next surprise was one everyone in the chamber would rise to applaud. He introduced Amy Williams of Fort Bragg, N.C., a military spouse with two young children who Trump said had not “seen their father’s face in many months.”

Republicans loved it. Democrats were shocked. Guests mentioned in the State of the Union usually have stories that bring the country together. He was a partisan warrior who was beloved by political right and hated by left.

But no one expected what came next. Trump awarded Limbaugh the Presidential Medal of Freedom, right then and there, asking first lady Melania Trump to put the medal around his neck.

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative talk radio host who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, was honoured in an emotional tribute.

The State of the Union Address: The First Joint Session of the House of Representatives in the Context of the Trump Administration and its 2020 Task Force

The political realities of what the President was going through, from the State of Union speech, were not able to be untangled from the White House deputy press secretary’s recollection.

She thinks the speeches should be a little bit dull. She characterized Trump’s approach as actative. “It really is very much like a wild card. It has got the flavor of a State of the Union address but then there is that added extra thing there of really kind of inserting that reality television aspect to it.”

Donna Hoffman is a political scientist at the University of Northern Iowa and she says that Trump claims more credit and asks less of lawmakers than previous presidents.

A State of the Union address allows a sitting president to recap their accomplishments over the past year in office. The joint address is an opportunity for a new president to lay out his agenda.

“It was drama-filled … you never knew what was going to come out of the president’s mouth,” said Cheri Bustos, a former Democratic congresswoman from Illinois, who was in the chamber that night. It was a State of the Union.

As COVID began to spread, Trump’s 2020 address was more of a reality TV show and more of a World Wrestling Entertainment smackdown.

If past is prologue, some clues about how Trump might approach this routine task of the presidency may be found in Trump’s State of the Union address from 2020.

President Trump returns to the House chamber on Tuesday for his first address to a joint session of Congress since retaking the White House, a moment where he is expected to revel in his shake-up of Washington and lay out some plans for the year ahead.

The administration is attempting a number of dramatic changes to the government, including a crack down on illegal immigration.

He will speak to Congress at a time when Republicans are in charge of both the House and Senate. Progress on delivering legislation to fund the president’s campaign promises has been slow.

Trump’s speech is set to start at 9 p.m. ET. NPR’s live special coverage and analysis of the president’s joint address and the Democratic response will also begin at 9 p.m. ET.

Trump’s Address to Joint Session of Congress: What you need to know about Trump & How he is Changing the U.S.

The address will give Trump a chance to tout his agenda to a larger audience in prime time, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll. The poll found that over half the people think that the country is headed in the wrong direction and that the Union is not strong.

In his address, Trump is likely to double down on his administration’s government restructuring initiative, known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which Trump has turned to billionaire Elon Musk to lead.

A bunch of legal battles are being caused by the administration’s move to lay off tens of thousands of workers and essentially close several agencies.

Trump is expected to talk about reducing illegal immigration. Days after taking office, he suspended the asylum process at the southern border as well as refugee resettlement. He moved to end citizenship for children who were born in the U.S. to parents without legal status, but that effort has been blocked by two federal judges. The White House has sought to portray the cracking down on illegal immigration as a success, but critics say that the hard-line policy is actually making immigrants and crime appear more bad.

The address might also include the topic of tariffs. Trump has already imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods and has vowed to impose steep tariffs on Mexico and Canada. The president has said the tariffs are aimed at reducing illegal border crossings and the amount of fentanyl entering the U.S., even as federal data show crossings and fentanyl smuggling both falling.

In the Middle East, Trump has said he wants the U.S. to take ownership of the Gaza Strip and redevelop the territory — in what would be a drastic and unprecedented shift in U.S. relations in the region. He has not given any further details on how the effort would work.

The role of the U.S. in brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is another open question, particularly after last week’s heated Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

What you need to know about Trump’s address to joint session of Congress: a unique role for a second term president with a ticking clock

An address to a joint session of Congress is similar to a State of the Union address — each happens in the same place and around the same time each year. There are a few different purposes that they have.

That said, Trump is in a unique situation. He is offering a far different playbook from his predecessor, but will also stand in front of lawmakers as a second-term president with a ticking clock. He is the first president to serve two consecutive terms in 130 years.

Slotkin will give remarks after Trump’s address. Slotkin’s win came in a state that Trump ultimately carried, and it was a rare bright spot for Democrats.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., will deliver the Spanish language response. Rep. Lateefah Simon, D-Calif., will also give a response for progressives from the Working Families Party.

Trump, Musk, and the Inflationary Era: Implications for the First Four Years of the First Presidency of the United States

Economic issues will likely be the focus of these rebuttal remarks. Democrats have prioritised addressing rising prices as a priority in their messaging since they lost on the issue during the election. Trump was campaigning heavily on fighting inflation, but thus far not have been focusing on that part of his presidency. Trump’s relationship with Musk is going to get criticized.
